We kicked off the power cycling testing with a pretty tough first test Tm of 120°C and DT of 60°C. After 160,000 cycles, there was no visible damage or any sign of deterioration, FM Tech is rock solid!! We knew it was reliable but it sure was nice to prove it.
So, in detail what did do we do?
The test was done on an FM Prototype single diode, the chip was a 5SLZ86F170050A 1700V, this was acquired from ABB. The attach material was conductive resin. The FM Prototype was mounted on a TDC3358/200FMF12G Heat Sink with fan assisted air cooling. Rth j-hs was estimated at 0,4 K/W.
The Power Cycle used an average power input of 100W, Ton 8s and the Toff 8s, with a peak current of up to 140A! This produced a temperature cycle from Tmin 90°C and Tmax 150°C (Tm 120°C and DT 60°C).
The test was run over 752 hours, and we did 160,000 cycles, there was no change, problem, or wear and tear, so we suspended the test.
Just to make sure we did some deeper temperature cycles going down to Tmin 70°C. So just to repeat; the Power Cycle used an average power input of 100W, Ton 8s and the Toff 8s. BUT this time we produced a temperature cycle from Tmin 70°C and Tmax 150°C (Tm 110°C and DT 80°C). We did 375 of these cycles and then decide stop as there was simply no change problem, or wear and tear. We switched it off and got ready to make a jump from Tm 120°C to Tm 150°C......watch this space for the results.
